It’s not time to make a change,
Just relax, take it easy.
You’re still young, that’s your fault,
There’s so much you have to know.
Find a girl, settle down,
If you want you can marry.
Look at me, I am old, but I’m happy.
I was once like you are now..
If they were right, I’d agree.

This text is taken from Father and Son written by Cat Steven. In this text, the son wants to a change but father thinks that his son likes to do so because of young age. Father asks him to be calm, find a girl, and live a happy married life like him. The father also found it very difficult to be calm when he was young. He could become very calm after thinking a lot carefully for a long time so the son has to think deeply because he will still be living in the future although his hopes and desires change.
When the son tried to talk about his desire the father refused to help him from the time the son learned to talk he was ordered to listen, not to talk. To avoid this situation, the son thinks that he should go away from home living his father fathers advice is no more helpful. It is not fight so he doesn’t agree with his father. It is difficult for him to keep his dreams under control. It is much more difficult for him to neglect. This situation arises because of generation gap as it means difference in ideas and feelings of old and young. Can Steven have tried to points out this very thing through his poem.
C. QUESTION & ANSWERS
Q. Is the son right to leave home? What circumstances would justify doing so ?
Answer: In my opinion, son is not right to leave home. The father is right because he has experienced that difference between the reality and dream. The reality is same forever but dream goes on changing. He has advised his son not to run after the dream but to accept the reality.
And son is right to leave home. The father is imposing his ideas on his son. Everyone his own interest what makes the future happy. And that may not makes son happy equally. The son has tolerated his father’s authority all his life. Now he is grown up. He can’t suppress his feeling and desires. He can’t accept the idea which he thinks is wrong. So the son is right to leave home. If the father had understood his son properly he wouldn’t have been able to justify himself to leave home. If father were ill or disabled or incapable of supporting himself, he wouldn’t leave home.
